Start a community garden
A small plot, a watering plan, and a weekly work hour. Grow food neighbors can take home.
- Who it is for
- Blocks, churches, schools, and unused lots
- Time
- One Saturday to start, then 2 hours a week
What you need
- A written okay from the land holder
- Soil test or clean fill dirt
- Hand tools, mulch, and seed that grows in your county
- A hose or rain barrels
- A simple sign with harvest hours
Steps
- Walk the block and name one unused strip or lot.
- Ask the owner or city in writing. Keep a copy.
- Pick three crops that feed people, not just garnish.
- Set one weekly work hour. Post it on a paper flyer and a group chat.
- Share harvest on a first-come table. Do not sell the first season.
- Write what grew and what failed so the next crew can copy you.
Notes
- Texas heat kills new beds. Mulch deep and water at dawn.
- Ask ACP TX for help if you need bodies, tools, or a public event.
